Water Mitigation – Continuity in Crisis
On December 14, 2015, Compleat Restorations responded to a water loss resulting from a toilet supply line failure that occurred on the second floor of the Eastern Lancaster County Library. The water flowed overnight and affected three floors including the New Holland Band Museum, Main Library, and Children’s Library. Compleat’s Emergency Response Team arrived and initiated water mitigation in less than an hour after receiving the call for services. Rapid response to water intrusion eliminated further damage to the structure and its contents. Thousands of books, museum memorabilia, and artifacts were at risk, but because mitigation began immediately, less than 100 books were affected.
Often, a business is temporarily closed until a restoration project is completed. This is disruptive to business continuity and impacts revenue. The Eastern Lancaster County Library is a cherished community resource, and the Library Board and Director wanted to make a plan to continue serving patrons during dryout and reconstruction. By exercising compassion, professionalism, flexibility and working together to problem solve, Compleat made it possible for the library to re-open in less than two days on a limited basis. Creative solutions for continuity included bookmobile service on the premises and a book return and pickup desk stationed in the lobby. Regular programming resumed in the Children’s Library in less than three weeks and all operations continued from that area while structural repairs were performed on the Main Library. Library patrons were pleased to have access to the programs and resources provided by this community library in spite of the disaster.
As the project continued, the library staff dreamed of going beyond restoration and fulfilling their wish list for improvements. The Compleat Restorations’ team facilitated those plans by extending timelines and schedules to accommodate carpet replacement, building improvements, and an electrical upgrade, elevating the library beyond pre-loss conditions.
